The vows have been exchanged, the first kiss shared, and you’ve ridden off into the sunset. Now what? While the celebration may be over, there are still a few important post-wedding tasks to check off your list. From updating your name and making final vendor payments to preserving your keepsakes and sending thank-you notes. Here are a few things you’ll definitely want to do after your wedding day!
Your Post-Wedding Checklist: The Final To-Dos
What happens to all of those beautiful wedding flowers after the celebration? Unfortunately, many of them end up in the trash. Instead, consider giving arrangements to your guests or even your event staff to enjoy at home. If you still have flowers left over, donate them to a local hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility. A simple bouquet can brighten someone’s day and bring the same joy and beauty it added to your wedding celebration.

Your wedding vendors worked hard to make your day unforgettable, so it’s important to ensure everyone is paid promptly. Most vendors require final payment before the wedding, but if anyone stayed beyond their contracted hours, you’ll likely need to cover overtime charges. Take care of any outstanding balances as soon as possible to wrap up your wedding on a positive note and show your appreciation for their hard work.

Return any rented items as soon as possible, including linens, glassware, décor, signage, suits, and anything else that doesn’t belong to you. If you don’t have a vendor handling the teardown and returns, designate a trusted family member or someone in your wedding party to collect everything at the end of the night. That way, all you’ll need to do the next day is drop off the items. Staying organized will help you avoid unnecessary stress and costly late fees.
If your vendors helped make your wedding day special, take a few minutes to leave them a thoughtful review. Positive reviews are incredibly valuable to small businesses and can help future couples find vendors they can trust. It’s best to write your reviews shortly after your wedding while your experience is still fresh in your mind. Many vendors will send you a direct link to leave a review, but you can also share your feedback on platforms like Google, The Knot, and WeddingWire. Your kind words can make a lasting impact on the businesses that helped bring your vision to life.
Preserving the special details from your wedding day is a wonderful way to enjoy them for years to come. Have your wedding dress professionally cleaned and preserved to protect it from stains and aging. You can also give your bouquet a second life by having your flowers preserved in resin, pressed and framed, or professionally dried. These keepsakes allow you to hold onto a few of your favorite wedding memories long after the celebration has ended.

While you can’t keep everything from your wedding day, you can preserve some of your favorite memories in a keepsake box. Consider including items like your invitation and save-the-date, custom cocktail napkin, vow books, or dried or resin-preserved flowers. These special mementos will help you relive your wedding day for years to come. I also chose to save cards we received, especially the ones with heartfelt, meaningful messages that I knew I’d want to read again.

This may not be the most exciting part of married life, but it’s an important one. Paperwork. If you’re changing your name, start by updating your Social Security record. Once that’s complete, you can begin updating your driver’s license, passport, bank accounts, health insurance, auto insurance, employer records, and any other accounts or documents that need your new name. It takes a little time, but checking these items off your list will make the transition much smoother.
Last but certainly not least, send your thank-you cards. Take the time to express your gratitude to everyone who celebrated your special day, whether they attended, sent a gift, or simply shared their well wishes. A simple thank-you is perfectly appropriate for guests you may not know as well, such as family friends or your parents’ guests. For close friends and loved ones, consider writing a more personal message or including a printed photo of the two of you from the wedding. It’s a thoughtful touch that makes your appreciation even more meaningful.
Cherish the Memories, Embrace the Next Chapter
Tackle each of these steps one at a time, and remember that not everything has to be done immediately. Give yourself grace as you transition from the excitement of your wedding day into this new season of life together. Start with the tasks that have deadlines, then slowly work through the rest at a pace that feels manageable. Before you know it, the paperwork will be finished, your keepsakes will be preserved, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy married life. When you look back on your wedding day, you’ll remember the love, laughter, and special moments; not the small details that came afterward.
