Dress shopping can feel overwhelming. With so many styles, fabrics, and silhouettes to choose from, it’s easy to feel unsure about where to start. The most important thing is finding a dress that feels authentic to you. Here are a few tips to help make the process easier and more enjoyable.

You don’t want to be hangry during this special experience. Eat before your appointment so you have one less thing to worry about. Many bridal shops don’t allow food inside, and you likely won’t want to be snacking while trying on dresses anyway. Choosing your dress is an important decision, so make sure your stomach is quiet enough for you to listen to your head and your heart. A good meal beforehand can help you stay comfortable, focused, and present throughout the experience.

Get ready for your appointment in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Think of it as setting the stage to see whether a dress truly feels like you. Personally, if I’m having a bad hair day, I don’t feel my best, and that can affect how I feel about everything I try on. You don’t need to style your hair and makeup exactly as you plan to for your wedding day, but putting in a little effort beforehand can make a big difference. When you already feel pretty and confident, it’s easier to focus on the dress itself and fully enjoy the experience.

The right undergarments can make a bigger difference than you might think when trying on wedding dresses. I recommend wearing a sticky bra or another supportive option that works well with a variety of necklines. Additionally, wear comfortable, full-coverage underwear. When it comes to color, neutral shades are your best bet. Nude, beige, or other skin-toned options tend to disappear under fabrics, allowing you to focus on the dress itself. Bright colors or bold patterns can be distracting and may show through lighter materials, making it harder to envision the overall look.

It can feel vulnerable to put yourself out there and share your thoughts on what you like and don’t like about a wedding dress. If you bring friends or family, they may have opinions about your choices. Remember that your consultant is there only to help you find a dress you love. Your consultant may offer suggestions or encourage you to try styles you hadn’t considered, but their goal is always to support you throughout the process. The more open and honest you are about what you’re feeling, the better they can help. If something isn’t working, say so. If you absolutely love a dress, let them know. Clear communication will make your appointment more productive, enjoyable, and ultimately more successful.

There’s no point in buying a dress you don’t truly love. Be honest with yourself and with your consultant throughout the process. If you love the neckline but dislike the fabric, say so. If the silhouette feels right but the details don’t, mention that too.
The more feedback you give, the better your consultant can guide you toward dresses that match your vision. They may be experts in bridal fashion, but they aren’t mind readers. Every “yes,” “maybe,” and “no” helps them understand your preferences. Don’t be afraid to speak up even if a dress isn’t for you. Honest feedback is one of the best tools you have for finding the dress you’ll be excited to wear on your wedding day.

It’s time to start saving inspiration! Pull out Pinterest and save any wedding dresses that catch your eye. Instagram can also be a great place to browse different designers, styles, and real brides for ideas.
When your consultant asks what you’re looking for, you’ll have plenty of visual examples to share. Showing inspiration photos can help communicate details that are sometimes difficult to describe, whether it’s a specific silhouette, neckline, fabric, or overall vibe. The more examples you provide, the easier it will be for your consultant to understand your style and pull dresses that align with your vision.

While Pinterest is a great source of inspiration, keep in mind that the exact dress you save may not be available in the store. Try to approach dress shopping with an open mind. Sometimes the dress you think you’ll love ends up feeling just okay, while a style you never considered becomes your favorite. That’s completely normal!
Every dress you try on teaches you something about what you do and don’t want. As your appointment progresses, your consultant can use your reactions and feedback to help narrow down the styles, details, and silhouettes that truly fit your vision. Be honest about what you’re feeling, even if it’s not what you expected. The more open you are, the easier it will be to find a dress you genuinely love.

When you’re trying on a dress, remember that you’re not going to spend your wedding day standing still. You’ll be walking, sitting, dancing, hugging people, and moving around for hours. Take the time to move in the dress during your appointment. Walk around, sit down, dance a little, and even do a full squat if you can! Pay attention to how the dress feels with every movement. Is it comfortable? Does it restrict you? Can you move the way you want to?
This is especially important for South Asian wedding attire, which can sometimes be quite heavy. Personally, I knew I wanted a dress that allowed me to move independently without feeling weighed down. Considering comfort and mobility alongside appearance helped me find a dress that felt just as good as it looked. Your wedding day is long, so make sure your outfit can keep up with you.

At the end of the day, wedding dress shopping should be an exciting and memorable experience. While it can sometimes feel overwhelming, remember that there is no “perfect” way to find your dress. Trust yourself, keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid to speak up about what you love and what you don’t. The right dress is the one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and excited to walk down the aisle. Enjoy the process and celebrate the moments. Have fun!
