Today I want to talk about must-have wedding photos. First and foremost, the most important rule for your wedding day is to have fun! I know you want every moment captured, but trust your planner and photographer to document both the big moments and the little in-between ones that make the day so special. This list is simply a collection of some of my favorite moments captured throughout a wedding day, and I encourage you to consider requesting them, especially if they’re meaningful to you.

When sharing your must-have photo list with your planner or photographer, trust that they’ll make sure those moments are captured. Focus on communicating the moments or ideas that matter most to you. For example, letting them know you’d love to have a first look. Try not to stress about specific poses, angles, or locations, because your photographer will guide you and ensure each image is captured beautifully. If you’re still searching for the right photographer, be sure to check out this blog post on how to choose the best photographer for you!
This is often one of the first photos taken during the day, usually while everyone is still getting ready and dressed. While it may not be the most important photo on your list, it’s such a beautiful way to showcase all the thoughtful little details you’ve carefully chosen for your wedding day. These shots can include items like your invitations, wedding accessories, rings, dress, veil, florals, shoes, perfume, and any other meaningful details you’d love to remember.

While you’re getting ready, be sure to let your wedding photographer take photos of the venue as well. These images help capture the atmosphere and beauty of the space you chose for your wedding day. After all, your venue is the backdrop for so many special moments, and these photos help tell the full story of your day.

Of course, you’ll want plenty of photos of the two of you! The real question is: what kinds of moments do you want captured? Some examples include hugging, kissing, laughing together, walking hand in hand, and sharing quiet, candid moments. Try to focus on the emotions you want your photos to reflect. These kinds of images will instantly take you back. You can also think about meaningful moments throughout the day that you’ll want documented, such as walking down the aisle, exchanging vows, your grand entrance, first dance, speeches, cake cutting, and your grand exit. At the end of the day, this is the ultimate date night, and your photos should capture the joy, excitement, and love you shared.

This can look a little different for every couple. Maybe you want a photo of your mom or sister helping you into your dress, or perhaps a group prayer before dinner. If you’re planning a culture-filled wedding, be sure to let your photographer know which traditions and moments are most important to capture. For example, at an Indian wedding, you may want special attention given to moments like the baraat or kanyadaan.
One of the most meaningful parts of wedding photography is capturing the genuine emotions of the day. You never truly know how you’ll react in certain moments (although you may have a pretty good idea)! Whether it’s laughter, tears, excitement, or pure joy, those initial reactions are incredibly special because they’re real. These candid emotions become some of the most treasured photos, serving as a beautiful reminder of exactly how your wedding day felt.

Don’t be afraid to add a little extra personality and fun to your wedding photos! Creative moments can make your gallery feel even more memorable. Some fun ideas include “ice-ing” the groomsmen, having the best man do a first look with the groom while wearing a wedding dress, taking a celebratory ski shot, organizing a flash mob, or even planning a balloon avalanche. These playful moments can lead to some of the most unforgettable photos of the day. That said, it’s always important to keep things tasteful and considerate of the couple’s vision for their wedding. If you want to plan a surprise, make sure to run it by the bride or groom first or at least think carefully about whether it’s something they would genuinely enjoy and appreciate.
Whether you spent a little or a lot on your wedding décor, you’ll definitely want it captured in your photos. After all, you likely spent months carefully planning every detail! From the color palette to the florals and table settings, each element was chosen with intention and thought. These detail shots help preserve the overall look and feeling of your wedding day and are usually taken before guests arrive or during a quiet moment when the couple steps away together.

This was mentioned earlier with flat lay photos. You’ll want your rings in detail shots and on you! Your rings are a beautiful symbol of your marriage and the life you’re building together. Be sure to request photos of the ring exchange during the ceremony, along with close-up shots afterward to capture all the meaningful details.

Capture all the people you love. They’re there to celebrate you and your new chapter together. Throughout the day, photographers can take incredible candid shots during the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. These moments reveal everyone’s genuine reactions to heartfelt toasts, emotional vows, and first dances. Together, these images capture the true energy, joy, and connection that fill your wedding day.

One of the first things that often comes to mind. These are some of the only structured shots I highly recommend planning. They aren’t just meaningful for you, but for everyone included in them as well, and they make wonderful keepsakes for years to come. For example, if your mom’s birthday is coming up, a framed family photo from your wedding is such a thoughtful gift. It captures all her favorite people in one place at a truly special moment in time.
These can be either structured or unstructured, depending on the moment. Of course, you’ll want those classic group photos where everyone is nicely posed and captured together, but don’t overlook the more candid, in-between moments as well. This includes getting-ready shots, everyone hanging out and celebrating, grand entrances, and all the little interactions that happen naturally throughout the day.

You also deserve a moment in the spotlight! You’ve put so much thought into your outfit, accessories, and shoes, and all of those details should be captured. While flat lays are beautiful for showcasing the elements on their own, it’s just as important to have photos of everything on you, showing the full look as it comes together and reflecting how special you feel on your wedding day.

In the end, your wedding photos are about more than just posed moments. They’re about telling the full story of your day. From the quiet details and getting-ready excitement to the emotional ceremony, joyful celebrations, and candid in-between moments, every image works together to reflect your experience. Think about it this way: what will you have captured in your day? When you look back, you’ll see not just how everything looked, but how it felt. That’s what makes your photos truly timeless.
